The global financial crisis hit Portugal hard, but after more than three years of depression, house prices in Portugal started recovering in 2014, with prices rising ever since.
Housing prices continue to rise strongly, fuelled by surging international demand as well as improved economic conditions. Property prices in Portugal rose by 6.09% (5.39% in real terms) y-o-y in 2018, to an average price of €1,220 (USD 1,395) per square metre (sqm), based on figures released by Statistics Portugal.
In the Lisbon area, property prices were up by 7.9% (7.2% in real terms) in 2018 from a year earlier, to an average of €1,502 (USD 1,717) per sqm.
